Secure ID: What does it mean for me?

What is it?

Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) announced the launch of Secure ID, a program aimed to further ensure the integrity of driver’s licenses and identification cards while offering additional protection from identity theft.

With Secure ID, Georgia is in compliance with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005 prohibiting the federal government from accepting driver’s licenses and ID cards issued by noncompliant states for boarding a commercial flight or entering a federal building. Secure ID will be phased in so existing driver’s licenses and ID cards are still acceptable until expiration.

“This program will give Georgians the most secure IDs we’ve ever issued in this state,” said Gov. Deal.

How does this apply to me?

Beginning July 1, customers who need to renew, reinstate or apply for their first Georgia driver’s license or ID card will have to visit a DDS Customer Service Center and present their original identification documents.

This means you will have to present:

  • At least one (1) document to prove your Primary Identity, and
  • At least one (1) document to prove your Social Security Number, and
  • At least two (2) documents to prove your Residential Address.

Please note that you must provide additional documentation if you have changed your name due to marriage or other reasons.

DDS has created a custom checklist tool  to help you identify appropriate documentation for receiving your Secure ID.  Be sure to check this list before you go!

DDS reminds customers that all locations are closed on Monday with Tuesday being the busiest day to visit.  Typically during the middle of the week during the middle of the day is the best time to visit for optimal customer service.
