Frank Shelp

Meet Dr. Frank Shelp, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities

On May 4, 2009 Governor Sonny Perdue appointed Dr. Frank Shelp Commissioner of the newly-created Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.  Dr. Shelp received his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia and his Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He currently serves as the Clinical Director at Georgia Regional Hospital in Savannah.

Dr. Shelp has an extensive background in psychiatry and behavioral health, having held positions such as Corporate Medical Director for United Behavioral Systems (a subsidiary of United HealthCare), Vice President of Medical Affairs for First Health Services Corporation, and Psychiatrist to various hospitals.

Dr. Shelp is a member of Fellow American Psychiatric Association, American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, Medical Society of Virginia, and Virginia Psychiatric Society.  He has also been published in numerous journals, such as the American Journal of Psychiatry, the International Journal of Psychiatry and Medicine, and the Journal of the American Geriatric Society.
