This month’s featured retiree is Mike Smith, who recently retired from Georgia Department of Transportation with 27 years of faithful service to the State of Georgia.
Mike Smith began his career with the Georgia Department of Transportation on March 6, 1989 as a Maintenance employee. On May 16, 1990 Mike was promoted to Equipment Operator 1 and then again in October to Equipment Operator 2 where he remained for a couple of years. In 1992, Mike’s skills and knowledge were recognized with his advancement to Equipment Operator 3. Mike continued to progress through the ranks of the Department from Highway Maintenance Forman 1 to District Bridge Manager. Mike received an early Christmas present in December of 2012 when he was promoted to Assistant District Maintenance Engineer, where he remained until his retirement on June 16, 2016.
Mike’s many years with GDOT were also evident in his dedication to the job and employees. He was an active member and supporter of the GA Department of Transportation Employees Association, serving in a vast array of positions; always willing to assist.
Mike also serves his community of Junction City at the local Fire Department where he began over 20 years ago and since 2000 has served as the Fire Chief of the Junction City Fire Department. Mike also began serving as the Deputy Coroner in Talbot County in 2012. In his spare time, he enjoys sharing his love of Bar-B-Que and all the trimmings with everyone around him.
