When a state worker is injured on the job, the Workers’ Compensation program provides medical and income benefits, and in certain circumstances, rehabilitation to an injured employee.

This team from the DOAS Risk Management Services Division ensures that benefits are received quickly and easily. They initiated use of a debit (prepaid) card for payment of weekly workers’ compensation benefits, replacing the paper check.  This assures that benefits get to the employee sooner and avoids the costs of issuing the checks. The card also makes it easier to confirm whether the payment has been received or not.

Georgia’s team was recognized with an AFIRM award from the national State Risk and Insurance Management Association which encourages innovation in the use of risk management tools, processes and programs in state government. The debit card program is an efficiency that other states can adopt.

Earlier this year, Division Director Lisa Pratt was recognized by CSPA, a state association for human resource professionals, for her 22 years of service.  As an ally and partner, Lisa provides invaluable information and assistance “to ensure correct processing of worker’s compensation claims and ‘above and beyond’ service to assist customers with unique needs.”
