Chief Tyrone Oliver appointed as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice

Gov. Brian P. Kemp appointed Chief Tyrone Oliver as commissioner of the
Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), effective July 25.

Oliver has certainly made an impact and given the State of Georgia many impressive years. In 1999, he joined the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, where he eventually earned the ranking of lieutenant and served as a public information officer in investigations. He went on to join the Brookhaven Police Department in 2013 and was promoted to lieutenant. Oliver also served as the assistant commander of internal affairs and criminal investigations.

On Jan. 8, 2016, he became Social Circle Police Department’s chief of police, and in November 2018 was designated as deputy city manager.

In addition to his new role, Oliver continues to serve the state as a member of the Social Circle Rotary Club and a board member for Student Success Alliance, A Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center, Advantage Behavioral Health Systems and the Leadership Walton Alumni Association.
