Credit union offers college scholarships

John Ewing, 2011 First Place Winner

If you’re a Georgia United Credit Union member and have a high school senior preparing to go to college or technical school this fall, check out the Verne E. Carne scholarship opportunity offered by Georgia United.

To enter, each student must submit a 250 word essay explaining “how the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ helps consumers during these difficult economic times, while providing an alternative to large commercial banks.”  Students also should complete the Georgia United scholarship application and provide copies of their high school transcripts and the letter of acceptance from the college or technical school they will attend.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2012.

The $10,000 scholarship award will be distributed as follows:

  • First place: $3,000
  • Second place: $2,000
  • Third place: $1,000
  • Top eight runners-up: $500 each

This scholarship is given in honor of the credit union’s founder, Vernon E. Carne. It is one of several ways Georgia United Credit Union supports the community. Most recently, their annual “Wish Tree” campaign collected 732 gifts for children in state foster care during the holiday season.
